When the founders moved off-campus, they realized that they had to buy a whole mess of furniture-- beds, couches, coffee tables, bar stools...the list goes on. It isn't too hard to find a $10 coffee table at Goodwill or a decent couch on craigslist, but the real problem was the bed!

Back in 2007 when the company was founded, there were few options for buying a decent bed at a decent price.
No one wants to sleep in a used bed--that is just nasty, and most mattress springs are only built to last for 5-years before rapidly losing their support. So Craigslist and secondhand stores are out of the question.

Most Mattress Stores will offer a bait-and-switch deal where they advertise sets for $200 but these mattresses end up being the equivalent of sleeping on a pull-out couch and they charge you an arm and a leg to deliver. So you decide the low-quality mattress isn't for you and the high-pressure salesperson licks their chops and directs you towards the 3 S brands (Simmons, Sealy, Serta).
Unfortunately, name brand mattresses tend to be quite expensive—built into the cost are the manufacturing costs, inventory costs, marketing costs, salespeople salaries...not to mention the retail store's margins and salesperson commissions. You end up getting less for more.

So with no options out their that satisfied the need for great quality at a great price with free delivery, SoCal Student Mattress was born to solve the problem of finding a luxury bed at dormitory prices.
